It's and it's time to ride!
We have gone from strength to strength in recent years and currently have a membership of over 60 riders that covering a very wide spectrum of ages and abilities from teenagers to the very senior and experienced; some are competitive club cyclists whilst others tend to be more socially minded riders who simply ride out for the exercise; there is something for everyone and members of the committee can put you in touch with others.
But regardless of this, whether young or not-so-young, competitive or not, we are, above all, a group of like-minded individuals who enjoy getting out on our bikes!
In September 2003 we hosted the Llandudno Crits. ArticleDownMemoryLane (The formation of our club on Friday September 21st 1928)
The club was founded on Friday September 21st 1928 and until recently, the focus of its energies has been on Road Racing and Time Trialling.
Although these disciplines remain our main focus, we have seen an increasing interest in off-road cycling since 2002 and a number of riders now get out onto the tracks and into the hills around the area on a regular basis. We are fortunate to have the Marin Trail a few miles up the Conwy Valley.
Several of our “regulars” also combine cycling with other sports and the time-trial season now sees us being joined by a number of keen local Tri-athletes. Other members participate in Audax events from time to time.
Once a year we promote and stage the Brenig Road Race. This event, which starts and finishes in Denbigh, attracts a strong field of riders and, in order to maintain safety and control, we rely on the support of our members to help us marshal the course as it winds up over Denbigh Moors, around Llyn Brenig, and into the Ruthin, and Bodfari areas; it a good day out.
Additionally, in September 2003 we staged a highly successful Criterium (closed road racing event) around the centre on Llandudno and coupled it with an Audax (distance cycling/reliability event) the following day. Membership of the “Rhos” entitles you to race in both the Club-organised and Open Time Trial events at no additional cost other than the entrance fee; we charge £1.00 an event for the Club Time Tr
ials and (typically) the open events charge £5 - £6. You are also entitled to membership of British Cycling (BC) at a reduced rate. This is because the club pays an annual affiliation fee to BC. Membership of BC also entitles you to a copy of the quarterly Welsh Cycling Union (WCU) newsletter.
The Club meets on the first Monday of every month in Mochdre Sports Club.
Every member is welcome at these informal gatherings where we discuss current issues and update ourselves on events and activities within the “Rhos”. Membership offers you far more than just racing. Our Social Secretary organises a healthy social calendar that extends throughout the year; these functions provide a good way of keeping in touch with others and gives the club the opportunity to offer our wives, husbands, partners and children some contact with the club.
Activities include our annual presentation dinner in November, barbecues (not in November!), and post race suppers. We also stage a social Christmas ride in mid December that culminates in Christmas Dinner at a local pub in the Conwy Valley.
Trips to the Manchester velodrome to sample track cycling, and a holiday to watch the Tour de France start in Dublin in 1998 have also featured. Some riders have also organised trips to the Spring Cycling Classics. The current “hot topic” is training camps in Spain during March/April 2005.
